The NS Registry of Motor Vehicles provides temporary and permanent accessible parking plates and permits at no charge. A person must apply with a form signed by a qualified medical practitioner stating there is a mobility impairment.
This hotel is located at the corner of Quinpool Rd and Robie St, across from the QEII Health Sciences Centre HI Building and several blocks from the VG Building. Discounted rates are available with documentation that a person is receiving care at the QEII. This must also be mentioned when booking. Parking is available at a daily rate.
"This program is an almagamation of programs formerly run by the Canadian Cancer Society-NS Division. The program is now run solely by MSI under the NS Department of Health. It assists qualified applicants with either gas costs or shuttle/taxi service for travel to medical appointments. It also provides funding to hospital outpatient hostels for those qualified applicants that need to stay in Halifax or Sydney during treatment. It also covers ostomy supplies.
Requirement: To qualify you must provide proof that your gross annual family income is no greater than $15, 720 per year. Current income will be considered. Application forms can be found in each cancer centre or satellite clinic in NS, or are available through a Cancer Patient Navigator or Social Worker at each hospital. This program does not have a program-specific website."
"The Newfoundland and Labrador Division of the Canadian Cancer Society offers the following items free-of-charge at all our local regional offices:wigs,turbans,mastectomy exercise kit and temporary breast prostheses. Items are also available in the Canadian Cancer Society personal resource room, ""Our Living Room,"" in the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic in St. John's. It has a quiet and considerate atmosphere where cancer patients can receive practical assistance from our emotional support volunteers.

Caregivers Nova Scotia is a non-profit organization dedicated to provind recognition and practical supports to friends and family giving care. They provide information and support via phone, a book and video lending library, caregiver support groups, one-on-one support for issues related to caregiving, workshops, and informative newsletters on caregiving issues.
Community Legal Information Association of PEI Inc., often called CLIA, is a non-profit registered charity. We provide information, referrals, and support to Islanders on legal issues.
Patients may be eligible for compassionate release for certain medications through special arrangements with specific drug companies. To inquire about these pharmaceutical compassionate release programs please contact the Compassionate Access Coordinators of the Pharmacy Department of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.
This provincial government program provides home care to all Nova Scotians who need help to maintain their care and independence at home. The services include nursing care (e.g. dressing changes, catheter care, IV therapy), home support (e.g. meal preparation, light housekeeping, respite care), and home oxygen service. There is no charge for nursing service for those with a valid NS Health Card. The fees for home support services are charged on a sliding scale based on income and family size. Fees are not charged for those who qualify as low-income families. The availability of home support services are limited. Call to schedule an assessment by a Continuing Care Coordinator.
Provincial home care services are provided to all residents of PEI. The Home Care Program offers a broad range of services to help people avoid or delay institutionalization or recover after discharge. Home care in PEI can include: Adult protection and social work; Integrated Palliative Care Program; Dietitian; Home support workers; Nursing; Occupational Therapy; Physiotherapy; Assessment for admission to nursing home or Institutional respite; community support services. All services are based upon needs assessment and available resources.

The Debtor Assistance Program is designed to offer counselling to those facing financial difficulty. Counsellors may offer assistance in preparing a family budget, or assist clients who qualify to present a consumer proposal. This program is administered by Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.
This taped message service provides legal information 24 hours a day. You can use your telephone keypad to listen to a recording about a specific area of the law.
Dial-A-Ride Nova Scotia is a support network of non-profit, community-based transportation systems, located throughout Nova Scotia. They provide information and referral to various local transportation services. Some are volunteer services but most charge a fee. Call or go to their website for a list of services in your area.
A provincial drug coverage program that helps pay for cancer-related prescribed medications. To be eligible, you must not have private insurance, be under 65 years of age, and have a gross family income less than $15,720 per year. Coverage is 100%. The medications must be approved benefits as per the Pharmacare formulary list.

"The library has over 500 books, pamphlets, audiotapes and videotapes covering a wide range of cancer-related topics. All are indexed on computer for ease of access. Information is available on subjects such as types of cancer, conventional and complementary cancer treatments/therapies, side effects, nutrition considerations, available community services, coping with cancer, and explaining cancer to children. The library is open to all patients, family members and support persons affected by cancer.
If you are in the Cancer Centre, you may borrow materials by simply going to the library and checking them out. Patients and their families involved in treatment at peripheral clinics have a limited selection and materials available to them. Library staff/volunteers are working on a provincial loan system to improve access to information, particularly for those outside St. John's. The library is located in room 2005 on the main floor of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre."
The emergency alert program recognizes the need of persons with health problems and offers an in-home emergency assistance program. By pressing the "help" button on a specially installed phone, a request for assistance is sent to a 24- hour monitoring service. For more information, please contact the emergency alert foundation.
Limited funding available. Purpose is to assist patients by offsetting their household expenses during treatment. This funding is accessed via the St. John Regional Hospital Foundation.
The Extended Stay Deluxe Hotel provides accommodations for cancer patients who travel to St. John’s for medical care or appointments. It offers discounted nightly, weekly and monthly stay room rates. Offering you the comforts of home, and resources to help you keep your day-to-day costs to a minimum, and includes fully equipped kitchens feature a fridge, stovetop and microwave, coffee maker and all the utensils needed. Complimentary deluxe morning coffee bar and complimentary shuttle to local hospitals as well as guest laundry room and fitness center.
A provincial drug coverage program that helps pay for prescribed medications and select supplies for any resident of Nova Scotia 18 years of age and older with a valid NS Health Card. There is no fee to apply. Each family is responsible to pay a deductible prior to receiving 80% coverage. This amount is set based on family income and size. A person can apply as a family of one person. You can have private drug insurance and enroll in this program, the Family Pharmacare program acts as 2nd payer. The medications and supplies must be approved benefits as per the Pharmacare formulary list.
Feed Nova Scotia partners with various community groups and food banks to organize and distribute food across the province. They operate a help line to connect callers to the closest food bank and other local services.

A non-profit organization that provides accomodation for patients while they undergo treatment at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Single rooms with a bathroom. Transportation to/from hospital can be provided. There is no charge but donations are appreciated ($25-30 per day). A continental breakfast is provided on-site.
The Hillview Terrace Suites provides furnished accommodations and discounts for cancer patients who stay for one month or longer. A doctor's note is required to receive the medical rate.
The Provincial Home Support Program has three distinct components serving persons with specialized needs: clients over the age of 64, clients aged 18-64 with disabilities, and children under the age of 18 who are living at home with their families or are residing in a care giver home under Child, Youth and Family Services. Services are delivered by the regional Health and Community Services/Integrated Health Care Boards throughout the province from funding that has been allocated to the boards. Program policies and standards have been developed provincially. Funding is approved on an individual basis to enable the individuals/families to obtain homemakers, home support workers, attendants, and other non-professional support required to enable them to remain in their homes and communities.
Provides air transportation to patients required to travel for medical services. Service is provided based on demonstrated financial need and a financial assessment is required - 3 weeks advance notice is required

This program offers income support, assistance with drug card coverage, medical travel, accommodations and meals to qualifying patients. This Department also determines eligibility for medical equipment and supplies If you are in receipt of financial assistance, please advise your client services officer of your medical requirements. For new applicants an " Application for Income Support " and financial assessment are required. The purpose of this fund is to provide support for patient's who are suffering from hematological malignancies, with funding for cancer treatment and recovery. Funding is limited. To access, contact department of social work at the St John Regional Hospital
This fund provides limited short-term financial assistance for accommodations, travel, and meals to children and their family members when traveling for medical treatment. Assistance is based on a demonstrated financial need and a financial assessment is required. For more information call the Janeway Child Health Centre.
"Kindred Home Care provides home support services; that is, we provide support to individuals and families in the areas of personal care, activities of daily living, and home management. We work mainly with seniors, veterans, adults with disabilities and adults recovering from illness or injury. Further, we provide respite which allows partners and families a break from constant care. Home care also enables early release from hospital and delays the need for nursing homes.
Kindred Home Care also provides, to the Department of Social Development, family support services which aim to promote, maintain, strengthen and restore the well being of individuals and families."
The NS Lawyer Referral Service provides the name and phone number of a lawyer who can meet with a person for a 30-minute consultation for a $20 flat fee. This can provide the opportunity to discuss options and potential fees.
Legal aid in a program for individuals with serious legal problems who are in financial need and cannot afford a private lawyer. Types of cases which may quality include criminal, youth justice, family, immigration and civil/administrative matters. A person can apply for legal aid by contacting one of the nine offices across the province

Meals on Wheels is a program designed to help residents in the St. John's and Mount Pearl area who are finding it difficult to prepare nutritional meals. Meals include soup, main entrée, vegetables, potato, and a dessert and are delivered by volunteer drivers. The cost is $6.00 and operates 5 days a week Monday to Friday during the lunch hour. Clients may receive meals at a reduced price with a financial assessment. Special dietary needs low fat, low salt, renal, diabetic or minced can be accommodated.
The Department of Health and Community Services offers reimbursement of a portion of the cost of transportation, accommodations, and meals for patients who have to travel to another region of the province or outside the province to access medical services. As there are specific qualifying criteria for this program, you are encouraged to review the application online or call the Department of Health and Community Services for consultation.
An outpatient hospital dispensary that provides medications at hospital cost. It is operated by a non-profit society. A person must be referred to this dispensary by a hospital social worker, family physician, or Income Assistance caseworker. Cash only.
"Motor Registration Division is the agency responsible for the issuance of the Mobility Impaired Parking Permit. The parking permit allows eligible permit holders to park in specially designated parking spots. To obtain a parking permit you must have the Mobility Impaired Parking Permit Application completed by a physician or nurse practitioner. The application is also available from any Motor Registration Office across the province. You are not required to have a driver’s license or a vehicle to obtain a permit. There is no fee associated with the permit.

Distributes food to those in need on Tuesdays from 10AM - 1PM. Individual must present proof of address and can access this once per month or if in dire need, twice per month.
The Nova Scotia Meals Network publishes a directory of meal programs in Nova Scotia. The directory is available by calling Continuing Care NS at 1-800-225-7225.
This fund is intended to provide short-term financial relief for any Nova Scotia resident diagnosed with breast cancer. Funds are raised through the efforts of a volunteer organization called Titz n' Glitz, and attempts to help with needs not met through government or traditional programs - child care during treatment, power bills, equipment, housing, alternative therapies, etc. The fund is administered by the social worker and/or patient navigator in the various health districts, and funds are usually limited to set amounts.

The Department of Health and Community Services provides reimbursement for a portion of the cost of eligible ostomy supplies for eligible seniors (65 + years of age).

Available up to a limit of $50. Funds are to be used for transportation, medication, equipment, supplies, or other extraordinary situations. These funds can be accessed through the department of social work at the Saint John Regional Hospital
This is a is a privately owned and operated, not-for-profit, specialty hotel providing 104 guest rooms for people visiting the Halifax area for medical treatment/appointments. Rooms are $40 (single) to $60 (double) per day. Funding for cancer patients is available. Reservations are made and funding arranged by the booking clerk at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre (NSCC) at the same time an appointment is scheduled. The funding does not apply to family members/support persons unless it is deemed by the physician/oncologist that this person is an essential escort. The booking clerk can also arrange for this paperwork if required. Point Pleasant Lodge (PPL) does provide a patient shuttle to/from hospital but please note parking at PPL is limited and is given on a first-come-first-serve basis. Those arriving at PPL must call them the morning of arrival, before 10 am, to confirm the reservation. Meals are available at the Lodge but are an extra cost. Two meal vouchers of $5.50 each are provided to the patient and essential escort each day by the registration clerk at the NSCC that can contribute toward the cost of these meals and applies to meals both at PPL and at the hospital cafeteria.

Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
"Public Legal Information Association of NL (PLIAN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Newfoundlanders and Labradorians about the law. Services include a Legal Information Line and a Lawyer Referral Service. The Legal Information Line provides general information about the law over the phone. Legal advice is not provided. The Lawyer Referral Service is available to individuals who require assistance in obtaining a lawyer. People who contact the service are offered the names of three lawyers who practice in a particular area. The individuals can then contact the lawyers to arrange a half-hour session at a nominal charge

This outpatient hospital dispensary is responsible for dispensing medications typically covered under special federal and provincial programs. Drugs requested through pharmaceutical compassionate release programs are also dispensed to cancer patients through this pharmacy. For certain medications, a person may be billed a dispensing fee of $15 per dispensing.

This is the only retail pharmacy available at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. They provide prescription drug and apothecary services as well as home health care (i.e. equipment and supplies) services. There is one location on the cafeteria level of the VG Building and another located on the 4th floor Robie St level of the HI Building.
"A diagnosis of cancer brings with it the need for psychosocial support. Working with other members of the team, social workers assist patients and families to cope with change brought about illness, anticipate and deal constructively with problems they and their families are experiencing, identify and utilize their resources, and access community resources when appropriate. In addition to providing education, social workers also work with other agencies and professionals on patient's behalf and collaborate with other health care professionals in development of patient treatment plans with a focus on psychosocial needs. One can self refer or be referred via their nurse/physician team.

"Health Care Social Workers are specially trained to work with individuals and families in dealing with personal and interpersonal crisis caused by illness, disability and/or hospitalization. The social worker’s role is varied and complex. We play a vital role maximizing wellness during the hospital stay, in easing the transition back to the community and throughout the clinical treatment process.
Health Care Social Workers provide a broad range of social work services to inpatients and outpatients at each of our hospital facilities. All social workers are registered members of the Canadian and Nova Scotia Associations of Social Work.
Referrals may be made by patients, family members, friends, community agencies and/or any member of the inter-disciplinary health care team."
The Spiritual Care Department provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families and hospital staff, by coordinating the services offered by hospital chaplains and pastoral visitors from community churches and faith groups. They are part of the psychosocial oncology team at the QEII Hospital and the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. One can self refer or be referred via their nurse/physician team.
This is a comfortable, supportive area where people undergoing cancer treatments can be introduced to massage therapy, therapeutic touch and reflexology. Head wraps and wigs are available. A hairdresser is available for consultation and styling wigs once a week. These services are provided free of charge by trained volunteers.
The Agnes Cowan Hostel provides accommodations for out-of-town patients who require diagnostic and specialty services available only in St. John's. The Hostel is located in the same complex as the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, the General Hospital and the Janeway Children's Hospital, but will also accommodate families of patients at St. Clare's Hospital. The Hostel is operated by the General Hospital Hostel Association.
A 23-room converted Victorian Inn located across the street from the QEII Health Sciences Centre VG Building. Discounted rates are available with documentation that a person is receiving care at the QEII. This must also be mentioned when booking.
The Lodge that Gives offers accommodations to cancer patients and their families living more than 50 kilometres away from the cancer treatment centre in Halifax. It is in walking distance of the hospital. Cancer patients stay free-of-charge and meals are provided at no cost. Family members/support persons pay a small daily rate, but this fee may be waived if the patient requires an escort or the family is experiencing economic hardship. Reservations are made by the booking clerk at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre (NSCC).

The Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program
The Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program provides financial assistance in the purchase of eligible prescription medications for those who reside in the province. There are four main plans under the program: Foundation, 65Plus, Access and Assurance
"Quality of life is extremely important, particularly for those persons whose lives will be shortened by cancer. Our palliative care personnel are part of a larger team within the health care system to ensure that patients are apprised of their pain and symptom management options, The Symptom Control Team at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre is available to see all patients and families who are having problems with symptoms caused by cancer. If you would like to meet with the Symptom Control Team, ask your doctor for a referral and arrangements will be made for an appointment. If you live outside St. John’s, please have your doctor or community health nurse call the Symptom Control Service and we will be happy to help with your care.

The Canadian Cancer Society provides transportation assistance to those who require assistance to and from their cancer treatment. Eligibility applies to those who do not quality for government assisted transportation and who are in the St. John's, Mount Pearl or Conception Bay area. To arrange for a volunteer driver, a minimum of 48 hours is required and you must call between Monday - Friday 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m. Appointment times must be between 9:00a.m and 4:00p.m.
Volunteers are specially trained, caring, dedicated individuals who offer their knowledge and experience to help both the client and their family through the disease process, treatment and outcome of their illness. The aim is to provide comfort and dignity to individuals and their families. Benefits include providing support, enhancing professional care, and providing respite for caregivers at home on a one to one basis. There is no fee for this program and referrals can be made by contacting the coordinator for an interview.
This service provides affordable door-to-door transportation for seniors and adults who need assistance because of a disability living in Halifax Regional Municipality. They do not accomodate wheelchairs. A person must first register for the service. Driving is provided by trained volunteers between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm Mon-Fri. Bookings are made on a first come-first serve basis and should be made at least 7 days in advance. Rates for this service vary between $10-$25 per round trip.
